Our crossing from Banjul to Sal was not the smoothest of sails but we made it in 3 1/2 days with mostly NNE winds. After our 8 1/2 month-break as landlubbers, and despite our Scopaderm patches, our stomachs dealt the best they could with the rough seas! :/ Our first night out we had to be quite vigilant during our watches, keeping our distance from the local fishermen on pirogues and trawlers....despite the immensity of the sea, we had the very unpleasant surprise of a near collision with a trawler which had no one on deck!!
Notre traversée de Banjul à Sal, 3 jours et demi avec des vents de NNE, n’a pas été la plus tranquille..... Après notre pause de 8 mois 1/2 à terre, et malgré nos patchs Scopaderm, nos estomacs n'ont pas trop apprécié la mer agitée! : / Lors de notre première nuit en mer, il fallait faire preuve de vigilance tout en gardant notre distance par rapport aux pêcheurs locaux naviguant sur des pirogues et des chalutiers .... mais malgré tout ça et l’immensité de la mer, nous avons failli faire collision avec un chalutier qui n'avait personne sur le pont !!
We also had a few technical problems...the main sail came unhitched at the top of the mast when 3 sliders broke off most likely from a crash gybe/empannage sauvage . The other glitch was more serious...the rudder of the wind pilot broke off!! We finished the crossing using the auto-pilot but given the the fact it’s under dimensioned for rough seas, it kept going off track!
Nous avons eu aussi quelques problèmes techniques ... la grande voile s'est décrochée en haut du mât (3 coulisseaux cassés nets) probablement dû d'un d'empannage sauvage! :/ L’autre pépin était plus grave… le foil/gouvernail du régulateur d'allure/"wind pilot" s’est cassé!! Nous avons terminé la traversée avec le pilote automatique, mais vu qu’il est sous-dimensionné pour une mer bien formée, il n'arrêtait pas de se décrocher du cap!
The upside of the crossing was that we caught a suicidal fish! The fish apparently swam into the hook because it was caught on its throat! Try as we might (Thierry gets 20/20 for effort!) we have no luck with fishing! So we were very grateful to this fish who gave up his life to feed us! ;) We don’t know the name of the fish but it was very tasty! 😋 During our crossing we also saw lots of flying fish, a solo dolphin and a magnificant sea turtle.
Côté positif de la traversée est que nous avons pêché un poisson suicidaire! Le poisson n'a pas fait gaffe car il a pris l'hameçon dans la gorge! La pêche n'est pas notre point fort (malgré les grands efforts et la persévérance de Thierry!)...de coup nous étions très reconnaissants au poisson qui s'est donné la vie pour nous nourrir! Nous ne connaissons pas le nom de ce poisson mais il était délicieux! 😋 Pendant notre traversée, nous avons également vu beaucoup de poissons volants, un dauphin isolé et une magnifique tortue.
Needless to say, we were very happy to arrive in Palmeira à Sal, an official port of entry. Our stay was longer than planned given we had a few repairs to do....fortunately Thierry is Mr. Super Bricoleur and was able to make a new rudder for the wind pilot, but only after finding the wood, the tools and studying photos of the old one to figure out the correct dimensions. MacGyver-bis struck again! ;)
Inutile de dire que nous étions très heureux d’arriver à Palmeira à Sal, un port d’entrée officiel. Notre séjour a été plus long que prévu compte tenu les réparations à réaliser ... Heureusement, Thierry est M. Super Bricoleur et a pu fabriquer un nouveau gouvernail pour le régulateur d'allure... mais seulement après avoir trouvé le bois, les outils et avoir analysé les photos pour déterminer les bonnes dimensions. MacGyver-bis a encore frappé! ;)
We also met Jujube another sailor who has a Kelt39 too! He and Thierry enjoyed comparing the different modifications and improvements they have made on the boats over the years.
Nous avons aussi rencontré Jujube, un autre marin qui a aussi un Kelt39....Thierry et lui ont eu plaisir de discuter et comparer les différentes modifications et améliorations apportées à chaque bateau.
We also hooked up with Bruno, a musician-singer friend who participated in the project with Tarrafal. He recently found a teaching job in Sal where has resettled with his mate Kelly and their son Naylan.
Nous avons également rencontré Bruno, un ami musicien-chanteur qui a participé au projet avec Tarrafal. Il a récemment trouvé un poste d'enseignant à Sal où il s'est donc installé avec son compagne Kelly et leur fils Naylan.
When we left Sal, with VIVE LA VIE repaired and robust as ever, our next destination was Sao Nicolau.
Before arriving directly in Tarrafal, we wanted to make a stop at the tiny remote fishing village Carrical at the southeasterly point of Sao Nicolau.
Lorsque nous avons repris la mer, avec VIVE LA VIE tout réparé, c'était direction Sao Nicolau. Avant d'arriver directement à Tarrafal, nous voulions faire escale à Carrical, petit village de pêcheurs situé à la pointe sud-est de Sao Nicolau.
Despite the very stressful night arrival - gusty winds and shallow waters!! :/ it was a delightful stay where we made new friends with some fellow sailors, Valerie et Pierre (from the cata Inch Allah) and Dorothy and Stefan (from the cata Invia).
We made a wonderful hike in the lunar-like canyon and ended up staying an extra day to go on a day trip en aluguer around the island. It was a beautiful clear day and a nice way for us to revisit the island we hold so dear....
Malgré la arrivée de nuit très stressant -rafales et haut fonds!! :/, ce fut un séjour très agréable où nous nous sommes fait de nouveaux amis marins, Valerie et Pierre (du cata Inch Allah) et Dorothy et Stefan (du cata Invia). Nous avons fait une magnifique randonnée dans le canyon d'une ambiance très lunaire et le lendemain une excursion en aluguer autour de l’île avec les copains. C’était une très belle journée pour revisiter notre ’île que nous adorons tant....
